Pelleting

Performance Horse Nutrition

Pelleted feeds are simply feeds that have been made into pellets. They vary in quality and nutrition levels based on the ingredients that made up the pellets. This processing method simply consists of grinding the ingredients together and forcing them through a die using heat or steam. The key advantage to pelleted feed is uniformity, so that every bite is the same, thus preventing feed segregation. Horses cannot sift through a select what they do and don’t want to eat. Also pellets are generally fairly digestible as the ingredients have been broken down during the grinding process. REMEMBER, however that pellets are only as good as the ingredients that go into them and in most cases you get what you pay for.
