Dr. Stephen E. Duren

Dr. Stephen Duren, a native of Soda Springs, Idaho, holds a Bachelor of Science in Animal Sciences from the University of Idaho and both a Master’s and Doctorate in Equine Nutrition and Exercise Physiology from the University of Kentucky. His research explored fat supplementation in racehorses and blood flow changes during exercise. Recognized by the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists and the Equine Science Society—where he served on the Board of Directors—Dr. Duren is widely respected in the field of equine nutrition.

 

With extensive professional experience, he has served as a consulting nutritionist for leading breeding farms and feed manufacturers across the U.S. and internationally, including Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, and Canada. In 2002, he founded Performance Horse Nutrition®, LLC, through which he continues to advise feed companies and horse farms worldwide. His clients include LMF Feeds, Poulin Grain, Robank Feeds, EBM, and renowned farms such as Winstar, Elm Tree, Tamarack Ranch, Bjorn Baker Racing, and Yarraman Park Stud.

Dr. Duren is the author of The 101 Most Frequently Asked Horse Nutrition Questions and co‑author of The Concise Guide to Nutrition in the Horse. What sets him apart is his lifelong horsemanship—he has owned and competed with horses himself, giving him a unique perspective on the connection between diet and performance. His formulations have fueled winners at every level, from local shows to prestigious racetracks, Olympic stadiums, and arenas around the world.

The 101 questions in the book represent actual feeding and nutrition questions that were asked of Dr. Duren when he was speaking at various equine events. He made a point of writing down these questions because it seemed that wherever he went in the world many people had either the exact same nutrition question or similar question.
