Can lawn clippings be safely fed to horses?

Feeding lawn clipping to a horse is not advisable for several reasons.

First, the diet fluctuation can lead to digestive disturbances including gas colic and potentially laminitis (founders).

Secondly, lawn clippings may contain other plant life than just grass.  Finally, lawn clippings contain high moisture content.  Combined with warm summer temperatures, mold growth may occur.
